CPCP bases its goals on the following values and assumptions:
- Each individual is important and unique.
- Each individual should have the freedom to develop naturally and to his/her full potential.
- Each individual should progress toward independence and self-direction.
- Each individual should have the opportunities to develop curiosity about and thirst for knowledge.
- The scientific study of child development provides important information for devising appropriate learning experiences. People should relate in caring ways to each other.
The staff shall understand and be sensitive to the varying capabilities, interests, needs, and problems of children in care. All staff who work directly with children shall have the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with the age group to whom the staff person is assigned; provide a stimulating and safe environment for the age group to whom the staff person is assigned; and use materials, activities and experiences to encourage exploring, experimenting and questioning.
All staff must furnish the preschool with an annual certificate signed by a practicing physician which states that the teacher is free from any disability which would prevent her from caring for children; proof of a recent negative TB test; and a complete records check by the Virginia State Police. No staff shall have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children or adults.
